Islamic Counselling for Depression
Depression is a serious mental health condition affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. There is rising awareness and an attempt to focus more on mental health and well-being, however, sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish between depression and low mood. Everyone experiences sadness or low mood from time to time – this is a natural human response and is often in response to an unpleasant situation. Depression, on the other hand, is characterised by persistent, significant changes in an individuals’ ‘normal’ functioning and includes symptoms such as:
- Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
- Changes in appetite (for example, over-eating or a loss of appetite)
- Changes in sleep patterns (for example, sleeping too much or disrupted sleep)
- Feeling suicidal.
Depression in Islam
Unfortunately, the cause of depression can sometimes be judged as others by a lack of shukr or not being thankful for the blessings being given by Allah. This, in turn, can make individuals experiencing depression or depressive symptoms feel even worse. It is important to remember that like physical illnesses, psychological disorders such as depression are also trials and cannot simply be ‘stopped’ by the individual. Just as we see a doctor or use medicines and remedies when we have a cold or flu, we should also endeavour to seek support and Islamic counselling in times of psychological distress from the appropriate professionals, and this should not be a seen as a source of guilt or shame. Depression can affect not only your physical health but can also affect relationships and cause marriage breakdowns.
