Fear of the Unknown

We all fear something. If I were to find a list detailing every phobia or type of fear, I’m sure there would be a handful that you have personally experienced, some you’ve never heard about and even some that you find completely delusional. However, people do experience different fears and their intensity in affecting an individual in being able to carry out day-to-day activities, varies too. Even if two people share a fear, the impact it has on our lives may differ depending on many factors, but I especially want to consider how having faith and patience in Allah, help people to overcome or at least, tame down these fears.

A common fear people experience is the fear of the unknown and/or of the future. Our lives are very short, and in this short space of time, there are many goals and expectations we have and want to achieve such as, having a financially secure, happy marriage and family,  happy and healthy lifestyle with barriers and setbacks out of the way. While this seems like an optimistic and optimal way of living, the reality is that we all have hardships and we also cannot know for sure what will happen in our future.

However, one factor previously mentioned that will surely help is having faith and patience in Allah as He Himself has told us that He ‘does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear (2:286).’ Similarly, Allah tells his believers ‘O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed Allah is with the patient (2:153).’ In times of today where the world is filled with negative thinking, where mental health issues such as anxiety and depression are as common as the flu, these words from our creator surely bring peace and tranquillity to the mind and soul.

Perhaps next time when fear clouds your mind or if you feel overwhelmed by setbacks that life throws at you, remember these words and let your mind be at ease because Allah fulfils His promises.
